Education Overview

Orientation is the first step towards purchasing a home.

Intro to Homeownership is a new course that was developed and implemented in the Spring of 2006.  This course was designed for any individual who is potentially interested in obtaining a KNHS first mortgage loan.  This is the step that individuals take once they have attended the orientation session. The topics covered include:

  • MSHDA products
  • the pros and cons of homeownership
  • credit
  • identity theft
  • spending plans
  • different types of mortgages
  • typical costs on a good faith estimate
  • affordability
  • prepaying your mortgage loan
  • predatory lending

Fast Track was designed for individuals who are mortgage ready.  This means that individuals that take this course are approaching closing on their home.  The topics covered during this course include:

  • mortage definitions
  • the closing process
  • saving & investing
  • life & homeowners insurance
  • record keeping
  • property taxes
  • energy conservation
  • maintenance
  • home imporvements
  • predatory lending
  • foreclosure prevention

This is an eight hour course that can be completed in two, four hour segments or one, eight hour segment.

Homebuyers Club was developed for individuals that have credit-related issues.  This course allows individuals that fall into this category to get on the pathway that will ultimately lead to homeownership.  Each of the topics discussed concerning Fast Track are also covered in this course, although additional topics include:

  • finding a mortgage loan
  • shopping for a home
  • the 4 C's of Credit
  • the underwriting process
  • types of mortgages
  • special loan programs

This is an eight hour course that can be completed in four, two-hour segments.

Financial Literacy is a special education program for individuals who would like a basic, yet thorough knowledge of various topics related to financial management.  The essence of this course is that it focuses on how an individual's mind-set affects everything they do in life, especially their financial state.  The topics that are covered during this course include:

  • individual & financial assets
  • dreams & values
  • S.M.A.R.T. goals
  • life events
  • identifying and planning for obstacles
  • finding new ways to save
  • developing a spending plan
  • communication about money
  • consumerism
  • credit
  • financial institutions
  • investing
  • protecting your assets

This is a sixteen hour course that can be completed in four, four hour segments.

It is recommended that you begin at the beginning of a segment to get the most out of your educational experience.
